Buying property in Syria from abroad

You can buy a home in Syria while living abroad, as long as you check before you pay.

Viewing from afar

Ask for a live WhatsApp video tour showing the whole property, the entrance and the street, or send a relative you trust.

Checking ownership

Ask for a recent property statement (بيان قيد عقاري), and have someone you trust, or a lawyer, see the seller's original papers.

Power of attorney

If you cannot travel, give a relative or a lawyer an official power of attorney through a Syrian consulate where you live or a notary, stating what they may do.

Paying

Transfer nothing before the ownership check and a written agreement, and prefer payments you can prove.

Signs of fraud

• A price far below the market
• Pressure to pay, or a deposit before any viewing
• Refusing a video viewing or to show the papers
• A seller who is not on the property statement and has no valid power of attorney
